Here follows a list with the must do:
Pelion Moutzouris Train
The legendary old train of Pelion, popularly known as Moutzouris (smudgy), has been operating since the late 19th century. It first ran with steam engines and Belgian-made coaches, playing a crucial role in the region’s economic growth. Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, son of the famous artist Giorgio de Chirico, designed the railway. Construction began in 1894, and within a year, the train connected Volos town with Lehonia, a posh suburb at the time.
By 1903, the railway extended to Milies village, covering a total of 29 km. The line crosses six arched bridges, five made entirely of stone, while the last one is built of iron. A true masterpiece, this railway has transported goods and passengers on short trips for over a century.
After years of declining use, the train was revived as a tourist attraction. Today, it departs from Ano Lehonia village, passing through Agios Athanasios, Agia Triada, Ano Gatzea, and Pinakates before reaching Milies. Traveling at a leisurely 25 km/hour, the journey offers breathtaking views and showcases remarkable architecture along the way.
As one of the world’s narrowest railway tracks, measuring only 60 centimeters, the Pelion Train creates an unforgettable experience for families, resembling a historic theme park in a peaceful landscape. Departing from Ano Lehonia, just a few miles from Kala Nera, the train makes a 15-minute stop in Ano Gatzea on both legs of the journey before returning from Milies.
